Issue: SmartwaySM
SmartWaySM is a partnership unveiled by the trucking and rail industries and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2004 to increase energy efficiency and achieve significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Trucking companies that sign up must develop a three-year plan outlining how they intend to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and must report their progress toward their goals to the EPA.
More than 600 companies have joined SmartWaySM, including 373 motor carriers operating about 400,000 trucks. The program is expected to save 554 million gallons of fuel in 2008. Trucking companies that join and display the SmartWaySM logo will be seen by their shippers and the public as committed stewards of the environment.
